What you may find interesting about the large trees in your yard is that they have root systems that branch out just a little further than the branches. This means they need slow watering out to the ends of the roots. Mature trees need to be thoroughly watered a few times a month during the dry seasons. Attention to climate zone is key to determining the best amount of water. Let’s take a look at the best ways to accomplish this:

Save Money and Conserve

No need for a fancy watering system when you can just utilize stormwater and do it strategically. You can redirect stormwater and street runoff to the mature trees that need it. Since this water would otherwise be wasted, it is still useful for trees. Standing water will suffocate the roots, so running water like this or from a hose is best.Orchard Park Tree How to Best Water Mature Trees

Using a Slow Drip

You can use a drip pattern to water mature trees by putting it in a spiral or zigzag pattern. Watering this way and avoiding saturating the base of the trunk is the best way to provide for the tree. Saturating the base can cause molding in the root system.

Spreading the watering out the way it would naturally occur with rainfall over a longer period of time mimics nature and is how trees best like to drink. Making sure the tree is watered three feet past the “drip line,” where the rain drips from the tree to the ground at its farthest point, is the most ideal.

Mulch Donuts

Some trees may require putting a donut of mulch around the base of the tree. This system helps them retain moisture and gain nutrients. The mulch releases these nutrients into the ground and eventually can be absorbed by the roots. Mulch also keeps the tree moist and insulated from too-warm temperatures.

You can test the soil by digging up some dirt at the base. If the dirt is moist and clumpy, the tree is getting what it needs, and watering is not necessary. However, if the soil is dry and falls away, it’s a sign that the tree needs to be carefully watered. You can learn more about mulch donuts with the Arbor Day Foundation.

Dry Weather

During dry, hot weather, trees may need to be watered up to three times per week, and from 20 minutes to three hours at a time. This helps the tree to soak in the water and nutrients it needs thoroughly. As previously mentioned, having the right mulch around the tree can help hold in the right amount of moisture.

You Are Not Alone

Mature trees can be beautiful, providing much-needed shade and protection from the elements. You can keep them growing tall and strong by providing the nutrients and water a tree needs. The good news is, you don’t have to do this alone. Caring for trees can seem daunting, but the best way to get the right help is to hire a certified arborist. They will have the right tools and training to ensure your trees are evaluated accurately.
